It was 1995 and I was 19. It wasn’t my first trip overseas, but this was my first encounter with a world apart. I knew I wasn’t in my proverbial Kansas anymore on my first day in Kathmandu when both of my shoes were stolen, right off my feet. I had to buy them back. One at a time. The left one cost me more.
